LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network, but many people are still making major mistakes on it. Here are three of the most common, and what you can do to avoid them!

1) Not Using Keywords in Your Profile: As with any other website, including LinkedIn is important (which means it’s also searchable). You should take care to include your keywords throughout your profile. The default heading “Experience” seems like an ideal place for people who work in finance or marketing to note their professional background. But if you’re a medical professional, your “Experience” heading may not be best suited for this. Instead, try the “Professional Experience” or “Career History” headings. Another place to include keywords is in the profile summary, which is often displayed at the top of your profile page above your name and contact information.

2) Not Joining LinkedIn Groups: Joining up to 80 groups that are relevant to your industry will help to boost your network and also help you build relationships with other professionals around the world who share similar interests. LinkedIn recommends that you join no more than 20 groups, but this is definitely too low. Try to be the best at each group you join, so that when other professionals are job-hunting they know you are active in your field!

3) Not Following Other People: Make sure you are always on LinkedIn. You need to monitor your messages and respond to messages quickly, otherwise, the person sending messages may feel ignored. It’s also important to engage in social conversations with other people on LinkedIn by commenting on posts and being proactive about reaching out to people with messages. Be as involved as you can to build as big a network as possible.

Two weeks ago, LinkedIn made a major announcement about their company that they have over 152 million professionals in their database! With this value, one can see that it is important to have an active presence on LinkedIn because of its potential. By making the above-mentioned mistakes, a user may not be able to effectively utilize his/her time and become a part of this network.

In conclusion, as a business owner or individual, LinkedIn is quite helpful in building relationships and increasing your visibility among key professionals from different industries. This networking website has been used by many companies for better communication with partners to build successful business practices.
